Traditions: The Foundation of Girl Scouting
Contributed by: Anne Pamp on 1/2/2007

For almost 95 years, Girl Scouts has continued to adapt to the ever-changing needs and interests of modern girls and young women. Over the last 20 years, programs have expanded to include many that build science, technology, and business skills. It's not just cookies and camping these days for Girl Scouts of Colorado, but the foundation of Girl Scouting is and always will be in the Girl Scout Promise and Law, which are honored in the traditional aspect of ceremonies and recognitions as they were when Girl Scouts began.

The investiture and rededication ceremonies are integral parts of being a Girl Scout. An investiture ceremony is designed to welcome new girls or adults into Girl Scouting. It is a very meaningful step in the life of each person as she becomes active in Girl Scouts for the first time. A rededication is a ceremony for girls and adults who have already been invested to reaffirm their commitment to the Promise and Law and to think about the meaning of Girl Scouting in their lives. Investitures and rededications are usually held at the beginning of each Girl Scout membership year. Because of the importance of these events, a beautiful and meaningful ceremony is usually planned and carried out.

Girl Scout troop 923 held their investiture/rededication ceremony December 13 in the Community Center of the Divine Redeemer Catholic Church. The troop is a multi-level troop consisting of kindergarteners, first, and second graders from the Divine Redeemer Catholic School. The leaders and assistant leaders have made special efforts to make the ceremony meaningful to the girls, working hard on fully understanding the Promise and Law and what it means to be a Girl Scout as well as providing a beautiful cake for the girls! It is amazing how excited and proud these little girls are to complete this traditional ceremony among their family members clicking away with the photographs.

Girl Scouts is an organization that recognizes the changing face of girls in our society today, but never loses sight of the importance of maintaining our foundations and its traditions.

Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try, To serve God* and my country To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

* The word "God" can be interpreted in a number of ways, depending on one's spiritual beliefs. When reciting the Girl Scout Promise, it is okay to replace the word "God" with whatever word your spiritual beliefs dictate.
