Gary Krug spent 20 seasons as Cheyenne Mountain's baseball coach.
He led the team to numerous playoff appearances and helped nurture two future major leaguers, as well as dozens of college players.
But none of that mattered last May when he was fired following the Indians' 16-3 season.
"It was really shocking," Krug said. "I was never given a reason why. The administration just said they wanted to go in a different direction. Until they told me I was going to be fired, I wasn't going to resign my post."
"We had a good program. We were well respected. I still don't understand the whole thing."
Cheyenne Mountain athletic director Tracie Cormaney declined comment.
Bernie Moncallo replaced Krug as Cheyenne Mountain's baseball coach.
Krug retained his position as the school's softball coach. He has been involved in the program for 12 years, five as the head coach. He also has been employed as a security guard at the school for 22 years, the last 10 as head of security.
"It always made me feel good when my former players came back to school and said 'Hey coach, thanks,'" Krug said. "Parents followed the program closely. The community followed the program closely. We had a good thing."
A 1973 Mitchell graduate, Krug played briefly in the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs in 1981. He was drafted by the Cubs out of the University of Oklahoma. Two of his minor league hitting coaches were hall of famers Ernie Banks and Billy Williams.
"You always remember guys like that," Krug said.
Krug was a member of Mitchell's state championship basketball teams in 1971 and 1973. As a youth, he played baseball with Wasson graduate and former major leaguer Rich "Goose" Gossage.
"I might get back into coaching baseball again as an assistant," Krug said. "Mitchell approached me, and I live about two minutes from there."
Krug's softball team is 6-8, 3-1 in the Class 4A Foothills League.
Sophomore Mekella Galliart (3-3, 1.02 ERA) and senior Ginny Levar (3-5, 4.54) share the pitching duties.
Berlin Graham is batting a team-leading .400. Other top hitters are Courtney Hopkins (.378), Trish Freeman (.325), Justine Martinez (.314) and Katie Kurtz (.256).
