The 11th Annual American Revolutionary War Reenactment involving over 250 fifth graders from all six Cheyenne Mountain elementary schools was completed Friday under a beautiful blue Colorado sky. Students returned to their regular classes this week, where they will discuss and write about some of their experiences connecting them to history a little bit more.
The event, recreating parts of the Battle of Brandywine, was filmed in documentary format by Darrell Osurn and his crew from You Can Live History. Students learned a lot about history, both the characters and events, by preparing and playing a role in this historical reenactment event. Although they were hot, dirty, and tired by the end of the day, many wished they could do it again. Many also expressed sympathy for soldiers, and a little better understanding of the difficulties of war, as well as the founding of our nation through this conflict.
Parents, grandparents, younger siblings and community members watched from the sidelines, in picnic like weather. Everyone seemed to enjoy the historical experience brought to life by the students.
As with many things in a movie, visual effect was important. The appearance of smoke was created by blowing flour through tubes in their prop muskets.
