I recently wrote a story asking for volunteer guides for the 8th Annual Historical Walking Tour at Evergreen Cemetery. I am pleased to say that the community responded to our request, making the Walking Tour a wonderful success!
Here is a brief overlook of what it takes to host an event of this size. There are donation letters that have to be prepared, sent out and followed up on. Posters to promote the event must be designed and distributed throughout the city. Often times there is a need for food and beverages. This leads to endless lists and phone calls that must be made. Someone has to shop, prepare and transport the food and beverages. On the day of the event there are displays to set up as well as tables and tents. Parking has to be provided and clearly marked. After the event everything has to be dismantled, put away and cleaned up. This is certainly not a complete list but I think I have made my point.
In a city the size of Colorado Springs the need for volunteers is great. There are no special skills or experience required. Whether you have one hour a week or one day a year or any amount in between, you are needed. There is such a variety of worthy causes that everyone can find what is special to them.
To all the volunteers, donators of goods and services, for your time, effort and enthusiam we would like to say a heartfelt Thank You! We could not have done it without you. In addition, a special THANK YOU to all of the re-enactors.
The Evergreen Cemetery Benevolent Society is growing and actively seeking new members. If you are interested in joining us please visit our website at

Thanks for sharing the story. I know without volunteers this event would not be possible.
