(The following story is a compilation of various reports.)
They were teenagers and sisters, Stephanie Works, 18, and Rachael Works, 16. They were shot to death by Matthew J. Murray at about 1 p.m. Sunday at New Life Church in Colorado Springs.
Stephanie Works diedat the church. Rachael was later pronounced dead at Penrose Hospital.
In a news conference on Monday afternoon, police said forensic evidence suggests Murray, 24, of Englewood, a frustrated would-be missionary kicked out of a youth program three years ago, is the person who also shot and killed two people at Youth With a Mission in Arvada at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Church security guard Jeanne Assam is being hailed as a hero. She shot multiple timesat Murray - striking him at least four times - as he entered a church building after shooting the Works sisters. Autopsy results show that the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a Gazette report.
Police said Murray carried an extra 1,000 rounds of ammunition in a backpack .
Assam said she engaged the gunman, identified herself and "took him down." New Life Church Pastor Brady Boyd and Assam refused to provide more details about the confrontation between Murray and the security guard, stating that information is part of the police investigation and that police had asked them to not discuss it. They would not discuss what she said to Murray, or his reaction, before she shot him.
Larry Bourbannais, 59, who was nearby when Assam fired her rounds, told KKTV news that the guard pulled the trigger "10 or 11 times."
According to The Gazette, Murray is one of two sons of Denver-area neurosurgeon Robert S. Murray.
The teenage victims from the New Life shooting have been described as outgoing, cheerful, faithful and smart by their uncle, Mark Schaepe of Lincoln, Neb. They are survived by their parents, David and Marie Works, and two sisters. The family lives in Aurora.
David Works, 51,was shot twice in the abdomen during the attack and is listed in fair condition at Penrose Hospital.
Two others, Judy Purcell, 40, and Bourbannais, 59, also sustained gunshot wounds. They were treated at the hospital and released.
Church officials consider the attack to be a random act. Boyd told The Gazette the shooter had no connection with the church.
There have now been 27 homicides in Colorado Springs this year.
