Comet is a very special dog. He is a companion dog for a boy named, Veren, who has cerebral palsy. Veren and Comet recently went to space during a mission at the Challenger Learning Center of Colorado. Veren and his dog were on the probe team for the mission "Rendezvous with a Comet" at the center. Their team was responsible for building the probe that would be 'launched' to Comet Encke to collect cometary material. Comet was by Veren's side through the entire mission helping Veren accomplish his tasks and ultimately the crew's mission.
The Challenger Learning Center of Colorado--one of 51 Challenger Learning Centers in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. and the first in an eight-state radius--is a space-based learning environment where schoolchildren, families, senior citizens, corporate teams and other community members fly simulated space missions. The CLCC features a Mission Control Center modeled after the one at Johnson Space Center and an International Space Station simulator where experiments are performed and probes are "launched" into the depths of outer space. The CLCC currently offers three on-site mission simulations:
Rendezvous with a Comet,
Voyage to Mars
and
Return to the Moon.
They also are accepting students for the summer adventure programs.

CLCC is one of the brightest-shining jewels in Colorado Springs' crown. When middle schoolers participate in missions, they gain valuable insight into the realistic possibility of a career in space technology and they light up with enthusiasm when describing their experience. What a great place!

Our kids have gotten excited about learning at Challenger Learning Center! Adults can also experience a mission simulation through their public missions and corporate training programs. I just need to purpose to do it some day!
