Contributed by: Danielle Nieves Oller on 1/21/2008

Pikes Peak Library District will present an exhibit in February that will give Colorado Springs residents an opportunity to see first-hand the impact of genocide in Darfur, in the context of more than a century of genocidal incidents from around the world. It is an opportunity to hear from speakers that will lead discussions about influencing global change and learn ways to become personally involved.

In collaboration with the United StatesHolocaustMemorialMuseum and The Greenberg Center for Learning and Tolerance, the exhibit "Genocide 1900 - Darfur" will present a timeline on genocide from 1900 to the present, with a focus on Darfur. Events will be held at ColoradoCollege on Sat., February 2 and East Library on Sun., February 3. The exhibit will be at East Library through February 29.

Film Showing: The Devil Came on Horseback

Sat., February 2 at 7 p.m. at Slocum Commons and Packard Hall, Colorado College, 5 West Cache La Poudre Street

This up-close and painful "call to action" film pivots on former Marine Captain Brian Steidle, who worked for the African Union as an unarmed monitor in Darfur for six months after leaving the military in 2004. The film shows what Brian witnessed and the actions he took afterward.

The film will be followed by a question and answer session with Steidle, whose testimony is featured in the film, and his sister, Gretchen Steidle Wallace, founder of Global Grassroots. A book signing with Steidle and Steidle Wallace, authors of The Devil Came on Horseback: Bearing Witness to the Genocide in Darfur, will be held following the discussion.

Exhibit opening

Sun., February 3 from 1 - 5 p.m. at East Library, 5550 N. Union Blvd. Exhibit will remain at East Library through February.
Presentation and book signing at 1:30 p.m.

Because of substantial evidence that acts of genocide or related crimes against humanity were occurring or immediately threatened, in 2004 the United StatesHolocaustMemorialMuseum declared a Genocide Emergency for Darfur. The death toll now exceeds 300,000.

Pikes Peak Library District will present the opening of the exhibit "Genocide 1900 - Darfur" with a unique opportunity to hear from speakers who will share their experiences in Darfur and from around the globe. The speakers include: Brian Steidle and Gretchen Steidle Wallace; Mohamed Yahya, refugee and Executive Director of Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy; Rabbi Anat Moskowitz of Colorado College; Will Stoller-Lee, Director of the Colorado Extension of Fuller Theological Seminary; and students from the Rocky Mountain Hebrew Academy in Denver.

The exhibit, consisting of a historical timeline, photographs, and film elements is free and open to the public, and will be on display in the East Library art gallery through February 29 during regular library hours.
