Colorado Springs enjoyed a magnificent fireworks display on the eve of Independence Day. Clouds rolled in on the afternoon of July 3rd and brought rainshowers to the northwest part of the city. Around 7pm, the evening sun dropped below the cloud layer to illuminate the area around Garden of the Gods and the Navigators.
Anticipating a rainbow, I drove down 30th St to the parking lot across from John Blair Bridge. Sure enough, floating above the meadow was a brilliant arc. As I took these pictures, several other cars pulled into the lot - the drivers and passengers also photographing and enjoying the beautiful view.
At the same time, lightning began to flash to the north of Blodgett Peak. Returning to the car, I drove north on Centennial towards the Peregrine neighborhood where I knew there would be a great view of the advancing storm.
When I arrived at the Blodgett Peak trailhead parking lot, the sky was still bathed in daylight. I took a few lightning photos there, but because the sky was so bright, the strikes did not stand out dramatically in the images.
As darkness fell, I drove south and up in to the hills of the Mountain Shadows neighborhood. From there, I had an excellent view stretching from Monument Hill north to Cheyenne Mountain south. The storm made its way south and west from Monument with several massive lighting stikes hitting the northeast and eastern parts of Colorado Springs.
From my vantage point high in the western foothills, I could see a fireworks display over the southwest part of the city. It was my lucky night. Lightning from another distant storm flashed directly behind the fireworks. It offered me the rare opportunity to captureboth God's and Man's handiwork in the same frame.
