Blog Entry 8 of 13 It's Raining Cookies
I'm getting way too hung up on what to say here. I imagine I'll write about the square-jaw phenomenon, the firefighter thing, and how many times I see the library guy, and anything weird that happens when I go to the store. Something weird always happens when I go to the store. Just a couple of days ago, I used the self-checkout at Wal-Mart and didn't screw it up. So weird.

NaNo and Nano
Contributed by: Sarah Pottenger   on 11/1/2006

A contest for an iPod Nano while I'm doing NaNoWriMo. It's fate, isn't it? Assuming that I'm eligible, the rules stated to blog about what songs I'd put on an iPod.

What a great writing tool it would be! I already got frustrated today because of my music selection. It's Day 1 of National Novel Writing Month, and I wouldn't survive it without music. It sets the mood, it blocks out neighborhood noises that would otherwise distract me, and it happens to be a very important part of my novel.

Karaoke also happens to be an important part of my novel. I have no idea how that happened. I despise karaoke. I have friends who absolutely love it, though. Ron knows every single word of "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head." Tammy has sung "Any Man of Mine" every time I've ever seen her do karaoke. Neither Richard nor Terry can carry a note, but they grab the microphone anyway and have a blast destroying Sinatra songs and whatever else they can get their hands. Terry picked me up once and carried me kicking and screaming onto the stage and trapped me there. And we haven't spoken since.

No, he apologized. I forgave him. And that was the last karaoke I have ever been to. These days, the only time I get onstage is for church choir.

Here's what I would put on an iPod that would aid my literary endeavors:

*Jim Brickman
*lots of classical piano, slower stuff--I've been listening to Schumann and Debussy . . . and Jim Brickman (I have a character who's a piano snob)
*Ella Fitzgerald
*karaoke music
*The Lennon Sisters
*champagne music

Let me just say a word about this. I used to watch The Lawrence Welk Show with my parents and make fun of it. They didn't like me watching with them anymore. But somehow I have gotten sucked in by the Champagne Music-Makers, and I eagerly anticipate the re-runs each Saturday. I am 27 years old. This is not the music of my youth. The music of my youth was New Kids on the Block. I got sucked in anyway and that engendered the idea for my novel.

And just for me I'd put on "Virtuoso" by David Phelps and crank it up loud enough to lose some of my hearing.
