Blog Entry 2 of 3 Childbirth: Read. Think. Choose. Become.
Childbirth and More will have information to encourage, cause thinking, motivate, and build confidence - regarding pregnancy, childbirth, and more! Women are designed to birth. Babies are designed to be born. Birth is not a procedure. Birth is a normal physiologic event. Women are not broken. Birth works. You, your baby and your birth matter.

Childbirth - Get resources and education
Contributed by: Desirre Andrews   on 6/12/2008

It's true that women have been having babies since the beginning of time so why does a pregnant woman need education on having a baby?

Birth has overall moved from home into the hospital and women no longer learn about pregnancy, childbirth and parenting in traditional woman-to-woman generational teaching. We learned about these things practically in our families or communities and at the feet of our mothers during her "coffee klatch" with friends.

Unfortunately, today information is often gathered by a few books that nearly every first time mom reads (WTEWYE for example), the cable/satellite "health"programs that showcase dramatized births (usually induced, medicated and/or surgical), and classes at the same locationthat is intended for delivery.

Are there other options out there for a pregnant woman to learn from and make decisions upon? The good news is YES there is.

Our community has many great offerings for the pregnant woman.

Here are some:

Several Independent Childbirth Classes ( www.birthingtouch.com, www.westsidebirthconnection.com, as well as, Bradley and ALACE offerings)
Prenatal Yoga and Exercise Classes
Breastfeeding Resources (Alliance Breastfeeding Center and LLL)
Prenatal Massage Therapists
Doulas for birth and postpartum
Birth Network meetings (third Weds. each month as Wild oats)
International Cesarean Awareness Network Chapter ( www.ican-online.org)
Pre and Postnatal Chiropractic care
Many homebirth midwives
Certified Nurse-Midwives
OB's who believe in normal birth

For more referrals, please e-mail me directly at desirre@birthingtouch.comor visit my site at www.birthingtouch.com.

Our community is so rich in birth-related resources that every pregnant woman should fully know her options, should be able to have the provider that she most fits with, should be able to birth in the location she really desires and in the manner that speaks to her inner most being with confidence and knowledge.

Birth matters -you and your baby matter. Seek out the truth about childbirth, please do not rely on current cultural norms as they change like feelings.

Here's to gestating with confidence, wise-woman knowledge and peace.
