The Rocky Mountain Chapter of Sisters in Crime sponsored a booksigning Sunday for State of Colorado's Attorney General, John Suthers. In his new book, A Prosecutor Makes His Case, he writes about what he looks for in a prosecutor, a job that finds no higher calling or greater responsibility than to see justice served.
The book is well written. John Suthers' premise is that prosecutors analyze whether to press charges, whether to accept plea-bargains, and whether or not to bring a case to trial. Such high authority carries the weight of enormous responsibility.
An individual's life can easily be ruined upon being charged with a crime. A jury does not find a person 'innocent' of the crime, but may find the accused 'not guilty' simply because the Prosecutor could not prove guilt of the crime beyond a shadow of doubt.
Before his book signing at Barnes and Noble Bookstore, John Suthers spoke to Sisters in Crime about a few murder cases he had to investigate over the course of his career.
"Prosecutors tend to lose sleep over the thought that someone might be getting away with murder." Any unsolved murder is a mystery, but John Suthers has
three unsolved murder cases that to him are no mystery. He knows who did it, but has had to live with the fact that he can't prove it in court.
John Suthers named the killers in each case. Later, I mentioned one very famous case to my oldest daughter who could not believe a State Attorney General would think like that. She said, "Oh, no, Mom. He's got it all wrong."
But, as for me, I'll never be able to hear or see their well-publicized stories again
without thinking to myself, "Uh huh. Thanks to John Suthers, I know now who really dunnit."
