Clerk & Recorder's Office - 2008 Citizens' Academy
Contributed by: Mary Lynn Black on 5/15/2008

An opportunity to watch the behind the scenes action on Primary Election Night is the highlight of the 2008 Citizens' Academy hosted by the El Paso County Clerk & Recorder's Office. The nine-week program offers citizens an "insider's in-depth view" of each of the four statutory departments -- Election, Recording, Motor Vehicle and Clerk to the Board. On Primary Election Night, August 12, the session is "Live from Centennial Hall," with participation in the election duties.

The Citizens' Academy will be held Tuesday evenings, 6 - 9 p.m., June 24 - August 19, 2008. Attendees will receive a thorough review and analysis of the functions, challenges, statutory requirements and customer service issues of the Clerk & Recorder's Office. Each person who successfully completes the 2008 Citizens' Academy will become an Honorary Deputy Clerk.

This is the second Citizens' Academy offered by the Clerk & Recorder as part of the office's public outreach program. The participants in the 2007 Fall Academy were able to personally interact with management and staff members, discussing issues and learning more about the services provided to the public. The Clerk & Recorder's staff also benefited by establishing relationships with the attendees and addressing their questions.

Bob Balink, Clerk & Recorder, said, "For several years, as part of our community outreach program, we have offered in-depth seminars and task forces to share the complexities of conducting elections. Our Citizens' Academy is designed to provide details of all major areas of our office that affect the citizens of El Paso County including Election, Motor Vehicle, Recording and Clerk to the Board departmental operations. We learned there is widespread interest in expanding our outreach program and we feel our office has benefited from this new dialogue with the citizens we serve. The Citizens' Academy appeals to community-minded citizens and those who may be considering a career in government service."

The application and schedule for the Citizens' Academy are available on the Clerk & Recorder's website, http://car.elpasoco.com. There is no charge to attend but space is limited. Participation is open to El Paso County residents. High school seniors and college students are encouraged to apply. Applications should be returned by June 12, 2008, in order to be considered. This is a great program for anyone interested in learning more about county government. There was a variety of citizens in the last one, including a few high school students that had a great time learning about county processes.
