Jeremy Bushnell, age 15, earned the rank of Eagle Scout on June 18. He has been involved in scouting since second grade, when he joined Cub Scout Pack 186 at Keller Elementary School. He earned his Arrow of Light and crossed over into Boy Scouts in 2003.
Jeremy is a member of Troop 2, which is chartered by First Presbyterian Church. Highlights of his experiences include camping at the Sand Dunes, Lost Creek, and Trout Creek as well as canoeing on the Green River in Utah and down the Missouri Breaks in Montana. He has attended Camp Cris Dobbins and Camp Alexander. He has also competed in the Klondike Derby with his troop, using a sled built from skis.
Community service has been a big influence in Jeremy's life along the path to Eagle Scout. He has assisted with Scout-led projects that included building a dog park, constructing a footbridge over a ravine, repairing erosion on several area trails, and landscaping for a nursery school.
Jeremy's Eagle project involved landscaping at St. Francis Episcopal Church in 2006. Junipers and Blue Spruce trees were burned by vandals, and Jeremy worked with church members and a crew of Scouts to replant the charred landscaping with xeriscaping. This project took over 315 hours to complete. He is particularly grateful to Don's Garden Shop and Pikes Peak Nursery for their generous donations.
Jeremy will be a sophomore at Doherty High School in the fall. He was presented a Doherty Spartan Award for Community Service his freshman year. He is already investigating college programs, where he plans to pursue an aviation degree with a goal of becoming a pilot.
An Eagle Scout Court of Honor will be held to celebrate Jeremy's accomplishmentat 2 p.m.Sunday, August 19, at the Silverwood Hotel at 505 Popes Bluff Trail.
Skills learned in scouting will serve Jeremy well in the future, and he is especially grateful to his leaders and fellow scouts for helping him achieve this ultimate rank of Eagle Scout.
