Colorado Springs Knitters Anonymous
Contributed by: Virginia O'Connor on 4/1/2008

Starting the group as a "local knitting resource", Deanna Martin, a resident of Black Forest, wanted a Web site that was easily searched for and found on the Internet. She wanted long-time residents and newcomers aliketo be able to find the group as quickly as possible.Knowing that many people use Google as their search tool, she settled on Meetup as the host site for the group. In September of 2006, she started that Meetup group ( www.knitting.meetup.com/1000). The first meeting was October 7th, 2006 and the group quickly took hold and gathered new members. The group is not limited to knitters -- spinners, crocheters, and any one else interested inyarn-related activitiesiswelcomed.
Originally named the "Colorado Springs Northside Knitters" (to localize the group to the north end of the Springs), the group recently crossed 100 members and was renamed "Colorado Springs Knitters Anonymous". The meetings are typically held at Panera Bread on North Academy (in keeping with the 'north end' localization) starting at 6:30 p.m. on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays. After registering with the group, members can RSVPso others know who's coming.
The group is involved in quite a few community projects as well. Last year, the group knitted soft hats for cancer patients and attended a teaching event held at the Briargatebranch oflibrary to teach teens to knit scarves. This year, they donated their scrap yarn ballsto a local "American Girls" event where kids and their dolls attend a tea party and learn to knit tiny yarn dolls. The occasional "stash bash" is held where knitters and crocheters can weed out their collection of yarn (and make room for more) by swapping and buying yarn, magazines, books, and more from others in the group.
The Colorado Springs Knitters Anonymous Meetup site includes details about other knitting groups in town, when possible, but if curious, check out this Yahoo group for full details: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/yarnovers/. This is an affiliate site where members discuss topics and events and keep track of meeting details as well. Many of the group's members attend the meetings for several groups each month. There seems to be never enough knitting time.
