Common courtesy isn't common (in trafific) !
Contributed by: David Haake on 11/16/2007

Why is it that otherwise normal people become maniacs when they get behind the steering wheels of their cars? Why is it so difficult to let someone in to the lane in traffic, especially on a merge, and furthermore, if you are let in, why is it so difficult to wave a "thank you" to whomever let you in? Is it really such a challenge to come to a complete stop at a stop sign? Must you "press" cars in front of you who don't want to go 90 MPH in a 45 MPH zone? If the car in front of you is going the speed limit, that is all you should expect.

Is it necessary to go 40 MPH in a parking lot? The speed limit is 25 MPH, yet you insist on driving like a bat out of hell, even in a place where children and families are present, and on foot!

On the other side of the coin; Must one drive so slowly as to cause an accident? Why do you wait so long to execute a turn or an action, particulary when you have the "light"? Why are you in the left lane when you could be parked?

How some of us got licensed to drive is a complete mystery to me. Even still, the total lack of regard for other drivers and pedestrians astonishes me.
God forbid that someone get ahead of you in traffic, or cross the parking lot before you can pass through it. Wow! You saved an entire 5 to 10 seconds by getting ahead of that car in traffic! Good job!

Relax! Stop acting like you own the place or like someone owes you something.

Does the world owe you anything? Be advised, it does not!

Courtesy may not be common any longer, but it should be. Just remember the Golden Rule as they used to teach it in school;

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

I suppose all is not progress.

Try this; Do something courteous today, even if it hurts your selfish disposition. Courtesy is contagious! Make the clerk at the counter smile. Take a moment to greet your elders and young people around you. Don't mow people down with your cart in the grocery aisle. Return spoken courtesy when spoken to. You are not better than anyone else, and should certainly speak when spoken to.

Take a moment to breath and be grateful for life! You may live longer, and be happier in so doing!

My tail light and driver's side turn signal went out earlier this last week. Believe it or not, I felt really GUILTY that I was probably making people mad. I also realized, it wasn't a shock to most people when I'd pause and switch lanes without signaling (because I couldn't). I even had my arm out the window in heavy traffic. The turn signal is fixed now. I see the disrespect and horrible impatience every day on my 20 mile commute. I don't get it - people die because someone couldn't wait ten seconds in their car. Driving like your ego depends on it simply isn't worth it.
