Little to Big League - first pitch Sky Sox
Contributed by: Matt Lasley   on 7/19/2007

From the Red Sox to the Sky Sox, Matthew is moving up in the pitching venues! It's been some time since the end of the regular Little Leauge Red Sox season, but Matthew was selected to through a first pitch waaay in the future on 18 July. That day came yesterday, and it was great. He was pretty impressed with the VIP parking, and didn't mind at all sharing the night with all the Bark at the Park doggies. He did confess to being nervous about heading out onto the field. Those butterflies would subside as soon as his foot hit the rubber -aaah, familiar territory. He had his uniform on until about a half-hour before departure from the house, but was very concerned with supporting the Sky Sox, and so went to more casual attire. He even postponed wear of the Boston ballcap until back in the stands.
He threw his pitch along with representatives from the humane society and the folks singing the National Anthem. I'm sure he was sick of hearing "aim high" prior to that pitch, but he did, and got the strike! "Right on the inside corner" as he described it. Definately a memory to last.
WIth the public affairs duties out of the way, we could settle into some great Sky Sox baseball! It was a good one, It was tied at 3 for a while, but all the kids agreed that the homerun to lock in a solid win was the highlight. 9-6 Sox over the Rivercats. Matthew even picked up another ball tossed to him by the visiting catcher. Matthew's brother, Caleb, got to meet Sox the Fox up close and personal. He was pretty startled by the sneak attack that put a big ol' fox nose right on his head!
I must say, the Sacramento Rivercats were the most gracious visitors I remember at a Sky Sox game. They were certainly not stingy with the balls, tossing them to the crowd as frequently as the Sox and even throwing up the balls after coming off the field every inning. One kiddo even left the field with a bat.
Great fun at the ball park, and a pitch to remeber for Matthew. Now, exactly where did I leave that fall ball announcement...?
