The first game against neighboring leagues was April 19 when the Tri-Lakes Little League Astros came down to Douglass Valley. Matthew began on the mound and threw just 21 pitches in those first two innings allowing a single run. LC's bat was heard loud and clear too, with a monster hit that stretched to a grand slam home run putting the Sox up by 3 after 2. Such a strong start would end in heartbreak when attempting to come back from a two-run deficit, only one crossed the plate before the final out. Astros 8, Sox 7.
Tuesday's game fell right under the snowfall, and so it was cancelled along with many events around town. That one will be made up Sunday.
The 26th of April felt like a far-away game, as the Red Sox traveled down to the El Pomar complex to play the Colorado Springs Little League Cubs. What a fantastic facility that is! The Sox jumped out to a strong lead with sharp base running and strong hitting to post 3 in the first. The cubs answered back with 2 at the bottom. The runs kept coming in triplets and the Cubs kept answering back with pairs. The bases were loaded at the bottom of the 2nd with 2 outs. A line drive down the first base line was intercepted by the D-Man, putting an end to the threat, and preserving the lead. The 3rd was much dryer on the hitting, and Marcus was a key contributor to that, getting three strikeouts to help hold off the Cubs' runs. The bats spoke again in the later innings, with a solid double stroked out to the fence to bring 2 in. Sharp runners in the 5th seized the opportunity brought by an overthrow to the pitcher, giving 2 more runs to the Sox. That was nice illustration of why the coach asks for backup on the catcher's throw to the pitcher! D-Man brought the game to an end throwing three straight K's to snuff out the Cubbies hopes leaving the Red Sox double the Cubs' 6 runs.
Go Red Sox!
