New next-door neighbors, just arrived from Hawaii, spent the first night in their new home this week, only to wake up to news the next morning that a crew of thieves had just worked the cars in the neighborhood.
Some welcome.
Luckily, their cars were spared. But all along Bellcove Circle, residents found their cars pried open and their contents shuffled around, and in some cases, missing. A neighbor said he found my vehicle door ajar. Apparently, my assortment of junk wasn't worth stealing; it was all still there.
Others weren't so lucky. The same neighbor had a backpack lifted. Another's rather elaborate car stereo was stolen.
There isn't much to go on. The residents of one house on Bellcove said they saw some people in hooded sweatshirts at about 4:15 a.m. walking the neighborhood. There was also an unfamiliar small truck in the street. I don't know if that's when police were called or the prowlers were shooed off, but by then it didn't matter. Seems like they knew what they were looking for, were efficient about it, and moved on. And pretty quiet, too. Most houses in our neighborhood don't use air conditioning in the summer, and the windows are open all night.

I find this very interesting as currently I am living in California and will be moving to Colorado Springs soon. It just goes to show that crime happens anywhere. I lived in Rocky Ford, CO before where we used to leave doors unlocked, windows open, even front doors sometimes. To wake up one day after a snow storm and find my truck door ajar with our new (less than one week old) stereo missing. It's kinda scary, but it happens everywhere. We just need to learn to keep an eye out for it.
