Fireworks mean freedom, responsibility
Contributed by: Kathy Russell on 6/30/2008

As Independence Day approaches, many families celebrate freedom by enjoying fireworks at home. But with that freedom comes the responsibility to buy only legal fireworks, and to use them safely.

Colorado state law defines what fireworks you may own and use within El Paso County.

What fireworks ARE legal?

Most common fireworks are legal in Colorado, with the exception of those items that fly through the air, explode or shoot flaming balls.

Legal fireworks include:

· Fountains

· Ground spinners

· Smoke bombs

· Sparklers

· Small cars/tanks with pyrotechnics

What fireworks ARE NOT legal?

If the device leaves the ground and/or flies through the air, it is illegal. This category includes bottle rockets or Roman Candles. This does not include "ground spinners" that may bounce up a little.

If the device explodes, it is illegal. This includes devices such as firecrackers and M-80s. This rule does not include "trick noise makers," such as snaps that are thrown on the ground. It does not include champagne poppers, or pull-string poppers that work by pulling two strings apart.

Who may have or use fireworks?

You must be at least sixteen years old to buy or own fireworks. It is illegal to sell or give fireworks to someone who is not old enough to have them. Children under sixteen may use permissible fireworks only under adult supervision.

Using fireworks safely

To enjoy permissible fireworks safely, use common sense. If your fireworks start a fire, you are personally responsible for the damage - even if the fireworks were legal. So, if something glows, or gets hot, or makes sparks, keep it away from things that might catch fire.

Prevent injuries by keeping all fireworks away from children. Most fireworks injuries occur to children, and usually injure the hands or face.

Also be careful with matches or lighters. When all eyes are on the pretty sparklers, nobody may notice a glowing match dropped into dry grass. Nobody may see a small child pick up a cigarette lighter.

Have a safe and happy Fourth!

There are many ways to celebrate Independence Day. Instead of buying fireworks, enjoy one of the beautiful professional fireworks displays offered around our area. If you do choose to use fireworks, buy only legal ones and use them responsibly, so all of us can enjoy the day.
