Illegitmi Non Carborundum
Contributed by: Jan Jackson on 11/21/2007

"Don't let the bas****s grind you down."

According to William Safire's New Political Dictionary on page 353, the above English translation of the pseudo-Latin phrase "illegitimi non carborundum" conveys, in English, what we HOA homeowners may need to remind ourselves to do -- every single stressed-filled day of our lives that are spent in our government-mandated HOA communities.

The phrase is sprinkled throughout this country's recent history. Small signs and plaques carrying this phrase have appeared in U.S. business offices and army posts for at least a generation. General "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell used it as his motto in World War II. In politics, the motto was popularized by 1964 Republican nominee Senator Barry Goldwater, who hung the sign in his office.

So here ya go, beleaguered HOA homeowners throughout Colorado and our nation. This is a phrase of historic proportions. Shall we also make it our battle cry as we try our very best to rid ourselves of all the power-and-money seekers among us -- private and public -- wherever we find them?

I'm going to! I intend to put two bumper stickers on my automobile. The bumper sticker on the left side of my rear bumper will say, REPEAL CCIOA IN 2008. The bumper sticker on the right side of my rear bumper will say, ILLEGITIMI NON CARBORUNDUM.

I figure I'll get lots of questions about both, i.e., "What's CCIOA?" and what does THAT say? (pointing to the bumper sticker on the right side of my rear bumper). I will tell everyone who asks exactly what they both mean, and exactly why they both belong together in the war against HOAs and CICs in Colorado.

Then, when the time is right in 2008, HOA homeowners and I will be out and about in the state of Colorado with petitions in hand to repeal CCIOA. When enough registered voters' signatures have been gathered on those petitions, they will be submitted for approval. After approval, Coloradans will be able to vote YES or NO on their 2008 ballots as to whether or not they want to repeal Colorado's HOA laws.

Wouldn't it be great if every HOA homeowner in Colorado decided to put copies of both of those two bumper stickers on the bumpers of their own automobiles!
