My Very First 5K Run!
Contributed by: Laura Clark on 10/28/2007

My name is Rebecca L. Clark, I'm 8 years old and I would like to tell you about my 1st 5K walk/run.

Early Sunday morning, my mom woke me up when it was still dark outside. I took a bath, ate some oatmeal, and got a special treat of some coffee to help get me going. My mom, my friend Holly, and I hopped in the car and drove to Washington Park in Denver.

The Girl Scout Council of Colorado was hosting a 5K walk/run to help the community learn about physical fitness. I am a Girl Scout and I wanted to go.

When we arrived, we stood in line for our racing numbers and
T-shirts. My number was 652. I pinned it to the front of my shirt. After we got our numbers, we walked to the starting line and stretched to warm up for the race.

At 9:30 a.m., they blew the horn and I started jogging. After jogging 1/3 of the way, I got tired and started walking. My mom told me to set running goals, so we would walk a little ways, then point to something and make that our goal to run to until we stopped and walked for a little while again.

While we were running, we saw geese gliding on the pond, lots of squirrels running across the grass, and one really big leaf.

Towards the end of the race, I was still running, even though my feet were tired. Once I saw the finish line, I rushed to the end. When I reached the finish line, I put my hands up in the air because I was proud of myself.

I ran the race in 44 minutes. I didn't win, but I tried my hardest, and it was the best I have ever done in a race. The best part of the 5K run was finishing ahead of most of the other racers. It was hard and I got tired, but I still want to go back next year and try to beat my time. The race took longer than I thought it would, but I still had fun!

When the race was over, we cooled down by walking around the fitness fair the Girl Scout Council was hosting at the park. We tried new sports and games, like fencing, rock climbing, and gymnastics. We also got to try the new Girl Scout cookies for next year. I like the lemon ones.

I can hardly wait to go again next year!

Great job, Rebecca! I've got a feeling you'll be running a whole lot more of these as time goes by. Loved your descriptions of the things you saw while you ran.
