Snow Cream!
Contributed by: Laura Clark on 10/22/2007

Now that we have had our first snow fall for the year, many of you may begin to wonder: what do we do with all of this snow? After you have made snow angels,, snow forts, ice skating rinks, snow men, and had a snowball fight, what is there left to do? Some local kids have the answer: make Snow Cream!

Now, I am sure that many of you have made Snow Cream for years, but for those of us who recently moved to Colorado Springs this spring/summer, this recipe is valuable information! I have broken down the process into just a few easy steps :

Ingredients: A large bowl and whisk are needed for mixing. The larger the bowl, the more snow cream you can make! You will also need a large spoon or ladle, milk, vanilla extract, and sugar.

1. Find some CLEAN snow. Emphasis on the word clean. Freshly fallen snow that has landed in an open field is a good place to look. Snow found under a tree, on the driveway, that has particles of dirt in it or is discolored should definitely be avoided.

2. After the bowl is filled with snow, make a 3 inch hole in the middle, and put the snow that was removed towards the edges (see picture). You don't want to waste any!

3. Fill the hole with milk, sugar, and about a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix with a whisk and taste. You will probably need to add more milk/sugar/vanilla. The amount of each ingredient needed depends on whether the snow is packed of fluffy, and how much snow you have. Keep adding ingredients until the consistency and taste are to your liking.

4. If you can wait long enough, and keep yourself from eating the snow cream right then and there, place the bowl back outside in the snow for about 10 minutes, to thicken the mix. Just be sure to place it in a clearing, and not under a tree, or in a place where a local dog, cat, squirrel, etc. can acquire the dessert.

5. Bring in from the cold and enjoy!

Once you get the recipe down, you can try jazzing it up a little. Replace the vanilla extract with other flavors, such as strawberry, mint, root beer, orange, lime, peppermint, or chocolate syrup. It is a great "first snow" tradition, that adults and kids will enjoy year after year! Special thanks to the Jamerson Family for letting us in on this snow day recipe!
