Girl Scouts Visit 14 Countries in One Night

Every February, Girl Scouts from all over the world assemble in their local neighborhoods to celebrate their connection with the 144 other countries that are a part of the Worldwide Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), an organization whose purpose is to promote Girl Scouting, community service and friendship throughout the world.

World Thinking Day is a global celebration, in which Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from all over the world learn about, and form a respect for the challenges and opportunities girls experience in different countries, a concept that is more important than ever in this current age of globalization.

This Feb. 1, Girl Scouts from northern Colorado Springs assembled at Antelope Trails Elementary School to celebrate the diversity and international friendship of Girl Scouting around the world.

Girls spent months preparing for this special event. Each troop picked and researched in depth a country that is a member of WAGGGS. Girls made costumes, created an informative display, prepared food and composed a skit about its chosen country to share with 18 other Girl Scout Troops in the area.

The night began with a parade of flags, when girls marched dressed in costumes, displaying their chosen countries flag. Then troops performed an educational and entertaining skit on the subject of their country, and were able to watch 14 other enjoyable cultural presentations. In this way, the girls not only learned about their own country, but 14 others as well.

After the presentations, girls were able to visit each of the booths that they and the other troops had created, learning a little about each countries food, customs, climate and culture, while also sampling food from each country.

The gathering was a huge success, as girls left the event with a wider global appreciation and understanding of how Girl Scouting benefits girls in countries all over the world. Girls learned that Girl Scouts focus on solving problems related to their countries' environment, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, crime and education, as well as a wide range of other issues.
