Monster envy involves most young boys; however, ever since Erich Gohlke was a toddler, he has loved Godzilla. Now, at 17, he has a small collection of Godzilla games, collectibles, and movies any monster-loving boy would envy.
Erich's first memory of Godzilla was of his Uncle Mike showing him three Godzilla movies. After seeing these, he wanted to watch all of them. Erich loved dinosaurs and Godzilla was his favorite! He knows everything about all of the movies, all of the characters and monsters, what happens in every movie, what each monster's strength is, which monster won, and why they won. He could easily win a Godzilla trivia contest.
In addition, while Erich liked the American-made version of Godzilla; the original, Japanese-made Godzilla is his favorite. Erich states, "The Japanese Godzilla didn't lose like the American one did. He's invincible!" When asked which movie was his favorite, Erich responded, "Oh man, that's hard. There are 28 movies." He later added, "
Godzilla vs Destroyah
is my favorite because Godzilla is the strongest and he's protecting his kid." Erich says there are also three different Japanese series versions of Godzilla; the first two named after the eras of emperors, Showa Godzilla and Heisei Godzilla, and the third named after the year 2000, Millennium Godzilla. The Showa Godzilla was more like a superhero, who fought the other monsters and helped the people. The Heisei, Erich says, is more like an animal. He would fight the monster and destroy the city. The Millennium is a mix of the two. He's a superhero, but also destroys the city on his way to fight the other monster. Erich's favorite version is the Heisei because he was 80 to 100 meters tall (he grew after being radiated by the humans). The other two were only 50 meters tall. As Erich was being interviewed for this story, he was doing what else but playing a Godzilla game!
A few weeks ago when godzilla.com announced the first of its monsters for a game to be released later this year for Nintendo WII, they listed Godzilla as a female. Erich was very upset, as were many other people. Due to overwhelming response by fans, they ended up changing the card to read that Godzilla is a male.
Erich would like to be involved in the making of Godzilla movies in the future. For now, he will continue watching and re-watching the movies, playing the games, and buying toys to add to his collection.
