The annual Junior Diabetes Research Foundation walk was held this morning. It was a beautiful day for a walk and the path from "America the Beautiful Park" goes south along Monument Creek and is shaded by trees, which really helped since the temperature was getting hotter as the day went on. Unfortunately, we waited until the night before to sign up and therefore, didn't raise any funds, but paid a little to enter the walk. Even though we were on the Memorial Hospital team, we made our own shirts the night before with spray paint and stencils, with the caption "Walkin' for Kory" on the back. Of course we were not only walking for Kory, but also all those children who are diagnosed with diabetes on a daily basis and the numbers keep rising. You can still donate and sponsor my son, Kory, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in July 2006 at walk.jdrf.org and search for walker Kory Gohlke in Colorado. The walk was followed by a nice KFC lunch and entertainment.
A talented young man by the name of Noah Moore provided us with some amazing entertainment which included fire and a balancing act. Apparently Noah has been keeping busy for the past 5 years with motivational talks and entertainment all over the world ever since he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 16. An excerpt from his website is a good reminder of how short life can really be for all of us, not just those with diabetes. And, that just because someone has a potentially debilitating disease, he or she can still make the best of it and live life to the fullest:
"Manifesto:
What would you do if you knew that this were your last day on earth? Do it. People are always planning and working for the future, but have you ever experienced the future? Take your time NOW to live in the present because the future is an illusion. All that will ever exist is THIS MOMENT. This moment is your whole life, so give it the attention it deserves. Smile, have fun, be happy. Enjoy it NOW. There's only long enough to spread love. Everyone has a different idea about how to live, dress, and act in society. Only YOU can know what is right for you. Be who you want to be and do what you want to do, NOW! Be an individual. Show how you are special. Be creative and spontaneous because it's just more fun. Life is a gift, so share its goodness with others. Love all and teach all how to be happy, unique, and compassionate like you! When should you love and teach? Now! There is only the present moment! Do your part for a better world by loving and helping to bring others' focus into the NOW. Play your life's song in harmony with the Instruments Of The Now.
We are an orchestra of uniqueness that needs every part of humanity playing its own spontaneous melody. To attain harmony in a band with so many different tunes, we must reach a new level of cooperation and consciousness. Please keep this sheet or give it to someone who needs it. "
You can learn more about Noah and see some amazing pictures on his website at
www.NoahsVoyage.com. The boys were also entertained by a long yellow snake they told me was an albino boa constrictor. I even helped carry it back to the container! There was also a python, but everyone seemed more interested in the yellow one, maybe because of its color, or maybe because it was larger.
