Newest kid's work features photography of John Fielder
It's not often that the First Lady of the United States asks for your autograph, but children's book author Claudia Cangilla McAdam had that honor. Laura Bush requested an autographed copy of McAdam's December, 2005 Denver metro-area best seller,
The Christmas Tree Cried . . . the story of the White House Christmas Tree.
"I was certainly honored to have that level of visibility," McAdam says of Laura Bush's request. "It was quite a thrill!"
McAdam doesn't know if she'll get the same request for her newest work, but it's a good bet that her just-published kid's book,
Do You See What I See?, will get its share of attention. McAdam's text accompanies the photography of premier Colorado nature photographer John Fielder. For each photo, a cutout and imaginative poetry verse explore the mysteries of a small detail of the natural world, while turning the page reveals its place in one of nature's grand landscapes.
"John Fielder's photos are absolutely gorgeous," says McAdam, herself a nature photography enthusiast. "His work inspired me to pen the text for the book, which appeals not only to youngsters, but also to readers of all ages."
"I'm looking forward to sharing
Do You See What I See? with others who appreciate the beauty Colorado has to offer," McAdam says. "I believe kids will be intrigued as they stretch their imaginations and broaden the ways they think about the natural world."
McAdam has received awards for her writing for children. She is the winner of the 25th annual
Highlights for Children national fiction contest. She is also the recipient of
Highlights' "Arts Feature of the Year Award" for a profile she wrote of Fielder.
On Thursday, November 2, 2006, McAdam will be taking part in Author Fest of the Rockies, a day-long event sponsored by the Friends of the Manitou Springs Library. She will be signing copies of both
Do You See What I See? and
The Christmas Tree Cried at the author showcase, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the Business of Art Center's 515 Venue at 515 Manitou Avenue in Manitou Springs. The showcase is free and open to the public.
