I'll admit it. After a long, draining week at work, my wife and I were in the mood for some of the mindless entertainment Hollywood seems so good at producing these days. "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" seemed like it would fit the bill. Two tough, straight firefighters acting gay?
I envisioned a movie awkwardly strung together by comedic clips rife with cliché and stereotype. Surprisingly, "Chuck and Larry" was more than that. The movie's underlying story contained a certain sweetness to it, and it was hard not to root for its namesakes, Chuck and Larry.
Kevin James reprises the chubby, loveable role that made him famous in "King of Queens" as the widower Larry who concocts a scheme to "marry" uber guy's guy, Chuck (Adam Sandler) in order to legally designate his best friend as his life insurance beneficiary and children's guardian.
Since Larry had earlier saved his life in a fire, Chuck reluctantly agrees to abandon his swinging-single lifestyle and the pair embark on a raucous effort to convince the City of New York that they are legitimate domestic partners. Of course, the duo's house of cards comes crashing down when a skeptical city fraud investigator, played by the forever-creepy Steve Buscemi, attempts to expose the hair-brained scheme.
Not even their sultry lawyer, Alex (Jessica Biel) can stop the craziness from being played out in the tabloids, forcing Chuck and Larry to perpetuate the charade amongst their macho firefighter buddies and the entire city. Although somewhat predictable and slightly preachy toward the end, the movie ultimately does a decent job of conveying the premise that friendship, commitment, and tolerance transcend the labels that we tend to force upon one another.
