Blog Entry 6 of 10 Adventures of the Travel Addict
My blog is a conversation place where other Your Hub members can help me find cool new places to visit in Colorado and around the world, suggest the best neighborhood restaurants I should try, and offer advice on how I can finish planning my November wedding.

Sharing favorite Halloween treats
Contributed by: Gina Grate   on 10/17/2006

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and apparently it's many other peoples', too -- I heard on the radio yesterday that the fun fall day is the U.S.'s third most celebrated holiday in the calendar year.

I'm glad to see the adults are finally getting into the act because when I got to be too old to trick or treat, for a while there wasn't really anything else for me to do but sit home and hand out candy. I'd prefer to dress up and have fun, too, though. Especially since nobody seems to come to my apartment complex to trick or treat -- I've had candy for 3 years running but not one single child to give it to.

So last year, knowing there'd be no cute little ghouls coming to my door, I scrapped the candy buying and decided to do some fun cooking for Halloween while watching scary movies with my fiance.

We made these awesome caramel apples with multicolored meltable chocolate and bat- and pumpkin-shaped sprinkles. I picked up the orange and white candy discs at Wal-Mart and those yellow-packaged caramel apple kits that come with the flat, round caramel wrappers and the popsicle sticks (it's good to see that some childhood favorites are still around). Then I melted the orange candies in the microwave and drizzled them over the caramel apples, followed by the melted white chocolate, and finally sprinkled the bat and pumpkin candies over the surface while the chocolate was still warm.

We also covered some caramel apples in just the white chocolate and used black gel icing to make cat, ghost and skull faces on them. They looked so neat!

This year, I found a kit to make molded candy succers that I'm going to try. It uses the same colored meltable candy discs. I want to try a couple other fun snacks, too.

What does your neighborhood do to celebrate Halloween? Do you have a block party, or a scavenger hunt? Do the adults meet up at one house and the kids at another for games and food?

And post a good Halloween treat recipe so I can try somebody else's reliable favorites! I'm looking for new treats!
