Blog Entry 38 of 38 Forest Creatures
Let me introduce you to our cast of characters. My husband "Pops" and I are both over 50, fairly educated and we live on five plus acres between Black Forest and Peyton with 4 Akitas and a truly imperfect cat, named of course, Purrfect. I grew up in Colorado, he's from Chicago. We love the Broncos and the Bears, music, television and technology. Some people lead fairly quiet lives. Our lives are usually filled with constant misadventure. I am not sure if it is because we have several dominant pets or because my husband is always misbehaving but whatever the reasons we are usually in the middle of a storm. This blog will chronicle our adventures when I have time to file them. Sometimes I will be asking advice, sometimes I will just try to make users laugh.

Mother's Day Mania
Contributed by: Pula Davis   on 5/11/2008

As I type this I still can't quite believe the misadventures we had on Mother's Day. First off, I was kind of moping around because we lost my husband's dear mother only a year ago so I thought the day would be subdued. Boy was I wrong.
My husband Pops had plans to bake a cake. During a discussion with friends he was bragging about his baking skills so I kind of challenged him that he couldn't bake a cake by himself. He bought the ingredients and actually did a credible job until I got involved. Twice he warned me that he wanted me out of the kitchen. But I couldn't stay away. I keep teasing him and in general being a pest. I took photos, some of which I have included here. We called our friend and invited him to stop by for cake, which was a big mistake.
Then the cake pans were cooling on the kitchen counter. That's where the real trouble began. I was searching for the right cake cover and somehow managed to cause an avalanche of bowls and lids in the counter right above the cooling cakes. Trying to catch the falling bowls, I bumped one of the wire racks holding a pan just enough so that it flew across the counter and actually landed in the dog's water bowl. I couldn't believe it. It was worthly of a TV comedy show.
Pops of course was unhappy. While he was out of the room I destroyed his entire morning's efforts. Although he good naturedly assured me that it was OK, he disappeared upstairs. Probably to keep from stangling me.
Never one to just let well enough alone, I cleaned up the major mess and then decided to bake more cake. I kept thinking about the friend we had called and invited over. So I quickly threw together another 2 tiers of cake, paying little attention to details or amounts of ingredients.
While they were baking, I informed Pops that I had made more cake and thought I had redeemed myself.
Once they cooled I lured Pops back downstairs and he tried to frost the cakes, with more problems. My parts of the cake were too moist and wouldn't stay together long enough to be frosted. And we didn't have enough icing to cover up the various cracks, holes and imperfections. So Pops had to go to Safeway for more frosting. (In case you wondered Pops is a very patient man.)
Once he got back we still couldn't get the cake to hold together. After checking the directions we decided I may have put in too much oil. I started throwing away my parts of the cake and managed to kind of frost the remaining cake. At this point we called the friend and told him not to bother stopping by if he really wanted cake, although later when we tasted it, it actually was not too bad.
So by mid afternoon we had some cake and I cleaned up the rest of the cake debris. Next time we obviously should just buy a cake. And I should go to church like I normally do on Sundays.
