Blog Entry 36 of 39 Forest Creatures
Let me introduce you to our cast of characters. My husband "Pops" and I are both over 50, fairly educated and we live on five plus acres between Black Forest and Peyton with 4 Akitas and a truly imperfect cat, named of course, Purrfect. I grew up in Colorado, he's from Chicago. We love the Broncos and the Bears, music, television and technology. Some people lead fairly quiet lives. Our lives are usually filled with constant misadventure. I am not sure if it is because we have several dominant pets or because my husband is always misbehaving but whatever the reasons we are usually in the middle of a storm. This blog will chronicle our adventures when I have time to file them. Sometimes I will be asking advice, sometimes I will just try to make users laugh.

Winter woes
Contributed by: Pula Davis   on 1/19/2008

We have started the year off with a bang, literally. We had a wind storm recently that rivaled any I can remember.

The wind split the cover on our boat in half, took off one of the siding boards on the barn, ripped the covers off of anything we had covered and pushed our trash can into the center of the road.

I ran out to the road to retrieve it before someone ran over it and of course wound up falling on the ice. That was the least of my worries - I knew when the lid from the trash can bopped me in the face that it was going to be one of those days. At least I only got a lump on my forehead and not the black eye that I feared.
It was the kind of day that you would be better off spending in or under the bed. But unfortunatley I didn't have that luxury. I was taking down holiday decorations and trying to rectify wind damage.

We got a temporary tarp to cover the boat and had to put that on in the snow and wind. The board from the barn will have to wait for warmer weather. Which does not appear to be in the plan. Temperatures have continued to drop and mix that with the unexpected snow storms every few days and winter has definitely got us under its thumb.

We had an episode with a vole, one of the rodents that normally we don't see this time of year, because they are hiding below ground. A very fat example of the vole family was wandering in our leach field area looking lost and appeared to be blinded by the snow glare. I went towards him and he actually chased me so I retreated into the house.

The doggies were besides themselves because they could not get to the vole so my husband went out to take care of things. I thought he was going to dispose of the critter but he just tossed it into a field next door, so we'll probably see Mr. Vole again. I can not believe how big they are.

The doggies are doing better than their masters with the winter. They actually enjoy the snow. And they love the ritual of being dusted off when they come in from outside. Even our puppy Roshi now understands the rubdown is a good thing and stands patiently while he gets the snow removed.
With all the weather the house is starting to be messy with mud and tracks. I guess it can't be helped. And I can't wait for warmer weather.
