Blog Entry 31 of 38 Forest Creatures
Let me introduce you to our cast of characters. My husband "Pops" and I are both over 50, fairly educated and we live on five plus acres between Black Forest and Peyton with 4 Akitas and a truly imperfect cat, named of course, Purrfect. I grew up in Colorado, he's from Chicago. We love the Broncos and the Bears, music, television and technology. Some people lead fairly quiet lives. Our lives are usually filled with constant misadventure. I am not sure if it is because we have several dominant pets or because my husband is always misbehaving but whatever the reasons we are usually in the middle of a storm. This blog will chronicle our adventures when I have time to file them. Sometimes I will be asking advice, sometimes I will just try to make users laugh.

Pula and the Pigeons
Contributed by: Pula Davis   on 7/23/2007

As I said in my last blog entry I volunteered to take care of a friend's racing pigeons for a few days while he was out of commission due to having an angioplasty.

Unfortunately, as it turned out, he had to have major open heart surgery. So my short stint turned out to be about a week.

The birds were really not that much of a problem, once I got over the sheer numbers, he has about 200 of them. That alone, was pretty intimidating. But I managed to squelch my memories of Alfred Hitcock's "The Birds" and enter the coops anyway.

I have always liked birds, in fact, if I didn't have the very threatening Purrfect (our cat) I would love to have a parrot or a pair of parrotlets.
But knowing Purrfect, they would be endangered at our house.

Actually the pigeons were fairly shy, keeping away from me until the last couple of days that I was feeding them. Some got bolder as time passed and ventured close, some actually pecked at me when I was distributing their food the final day.

Their setup is really fascinating: he has them divided by function and they actually have access to the outside via extended cages that are open.
The tiny babies were, of course, my favorites, they look so cute cuddled together in their nests. I used the look but don't touch rule, which I am sure their very protective moms appreciated.

I am happy to report that my friend is now out of the hospital, and although he can't handle the food and water on his own, he is mobile enough to give someone orders. I am even happier to report that the birds appeared to be no worse for the wear, just a little confused as to where their real caretaker was.

One funny sideline from taking care of the pigeons was how my doggies would sniff me when I came home. I am sure they were trying to figure out what the strange smell was and where in the world I had been.

Speaking of the doggies, poor Kuma is not handling the heat very well at all. Kuma just turned 9 years. He seems drained by the high temperatures and sun. We haven't had any real cool downs until night time for several weeks. A good rain would help.

The other dogs are also not quite their lively selves, preferring to lay in the shade or hide under the deck.

Not much else going on with us. Getting ready for a big gathering at our place in early August. Once every summer we try to have a big barbeque. We are trying to get everything organized for that.

Paula, I think it was very nice of you to help out your neighbor with his pigeons! It sounds like it was very interesting. Glad to hear all is well with him now. Looking forward to more interesting stories. How was the BBQ??
