Blog Entry 30 of 38 Forest Creatures
Let me introduce you to our cast of characters. My husband "Pops" and I are both over 50, fairly educated and we live on five plus acres between Black Forest and Peyton with 4 Akitas and a truly imperfect cat, named of course, Purrfect. I grew up in Colorado, he's from Chicago. We love the Broncos and the Bears, music, television and technology. Some people lead fairly quiet lives. Our lives are usually filled with constant misadventure. I am not sure if it is because we have several dominant pets or because my husband is always misbehaving but whatever the reasons we are usually in the middle of a storm. This blog will chronicle our adventures when I have time to file them. Sometimes I will be asking advice, sometimes I will just try to make users laugh.

Whoa! Roshi
Contributed by: Pula Davis   on 7/9/2007

I don't know where to start telling my latest dog tale. I took our youngest dog, Roshi, to my husband Pops' company picnic. Early warning sign that this wasn't a good plan was Roshi made it obvious that he did not want to go. I basically had to lure him inside with treats and coax him into the car. He wouldn't get into the back of the SUV so he wound up sitting very uncomfortably in the front seat. He whimpered a couple of times, but then settled down, at least for the ride.
That was the most settled he was until late that night. Our troubles began when a bee flew into the car and I almost lost it. Fortunately the bee hit something on its way into the vehicle so it was unconsious and I was able to step on it, all while trying to drive.
Next I got lost. Headed for Fox Run Park on Rollercoaster Road, I must have missed the turn, most likely when I was killing the bee and ended up having to turn around and go back to the park entrance.
Once we finally got to the park I had to drag Roshi out of the car that he didn't want to get into in the first place.
Anyone who thinks Roshi atnine months is easy to drag should know he now weighs about 85lbs. (So much for him being the runt of the litter.)
I thought he would like the attention he'd get from all my husband's co-workers and their families at the picnic. He did not. After hunkering down under a bush, he barked, growled and cowered under me or my husband for most of the outing. I definitely need to work on his people skills - especially when it comes to small people, namely children.
Roshi is afraid of kids. He barked at them, while hiding from them, a sure indication of fear. He was hilarious when my husband tore open a pinatta stuffed with candy that the kids were unable to burst. The children surged foward to get the candy that fell out. I think Roshi thought they were attacking Pops and he really threw a fit. It was all I could do to hold onto him. He definitely needs to be exposed to more loud noises and commotion - he doesn't seem to understand running and screaming. Which of course excited children do a lot of at parks.
Roshi knew some of the folks at the picnic and allowed them to pet him and give him attention, which really made telling other folks to steer clear of him difficult. He is nothing like his mom, Sable, whose personality is so friendly and outgoing. Next outing Roshi will get his wish, he won't have to go.
The reunion at home when Roshi ran out into the yard was pretty endearing. You would have thought he had been kidnapped for days - not just gone for an afternoon. The girls sniffed him and licked him. Even Kuma gave him the once over. Sable kept licking his tail so I checked it out and something, a spider, a wasp, had bitten his tail. Poor guy he really had a very bad day.

This weekend I volunteered to feed a friend's pigeons while he is recuperating from surgery. I am sure I will have lots of "adventures" to report afterwards. I was envisioning about 50-60 birds and he has over 200! The sight of them coming in to be fed was pretty intimidating. But surely it can't be more daunting than feeding 4 hungry Akitas.
