Blog Entry 28 of 38 Forest Creatures
Let me introduce you to our cast of characters. My husband "Pops" and I are both over 50, fairly educated and we live on five plus acres between Black Forest and Peyton with 4 Akitas and a truly imperfect cat, named of course, Purrfect. I grew up in Colorado, he's from Chicago. We love the Broncos and the Bears, music, television and technology. Some people lead fairly quiet lives. Our lives are usually filled with constant misadventure. I am not sure if it is because we have several dominant pets or because my husband is always misbehaving but whatever the reasons we are usually in the middle of a storm. This blog will chronicle our adventures when I have time to file them. Sometimes I will be asking advice, sometimes I will just try to make users laugh.

Having heard from several of my 'grandpups' via their owners, I thought I would go through a roundup of how some of the puppies are doing. A lot of the similarities between the pups is pretty uncanny. They are all smart, healthy and demanding like their parents. We are fortunate that they are all in loving, caring homes.

In Highlands Ranch, our favorite boy, Baloo, is a happy and curious guy who loves to follow his humans around. Like any good Akita he doesn't want to be left out of anything. He and Lilly, an older rescue Akita, play all day long and cuddle together at night. His owners report that he is about 70 lbs now. He has retained his distinctive black feet and sweet face.

In Castle Rock we have 2 pups, from different litters, Bailey and Dodger. These owners are definitely brave, having 2 of our strong-willed dogs to deal with. The 'kids' play constantly and have bonded with each other. Their yard is a bit worse for the wear, but both are healthy and Bailey sounds very similar to Roshi in temperament. She is at that bark at everything stage. She weighs in at 78lbs and Dodger, who turns 2 in June, is now 100 plus. Quite a pair.

In Woodland Park, our girl Misha is a real classic beauty. She's a combination of her mom and dad's looks. She juggles between being a sweet loveable angel to chewing the up computer wires. Her owner was literally in the process of sending me an update on her progress when Misha chewed through the wires, disrupting their internet access for days. She also shares her home with an older Husky, Dakota, that romps with her in the snow which she enjoys.

In Salt Lake, Utah, another pup from the same litter as Beauty, Rocky had grown into a handsome guy who knows commands in both Spanish and English. His owner reports that he is a creature of habit, must go for walks at a certain time, snow or not. He is very healthy which was so important to his family, because the first Akita they bought at a pet store was not healthy at all and died young. The family says he shares his home with his human brother.

And here in the Springs we have Tika and Sasha, both of which are beautiful girls. Sasha's owners say she's the best dog they have had. A compliment. She's completely trained and adores her child playmate, Samantha. Tika is another very strikingly pretty dog, kind of protective of her owner as Akitas can be.

And last, but of course never least, we still have Roshi. Who is almost as big as his mom and a constant source of mischief and mayhem. This past weekend I was installing mole repellant spikes in the pasture and he was busily digging them up. He is seldom without a toy in his mouth, or better yet a sock or shoe that we have neglected to secure. When I am in the hot tub he is now tall enough to attack the back of my head. He thinks the cat Purrfect is a possible playmate which hasn't gone over too well with our feline king. Any encounter they have is always a romp for all of us.

That concludes my roundup. Haven't heard from a couple of the pups' owners but I am confident that they too are characters.

Recently had to put my 12 year old Akita "Taz" down due to severe arthritis suffering. A real heartbreak. While I'm not ready to replace her yet, I know there will come a day when my soul seeks to bond with a new faithful companion. I cannot think of another breed that would suit me and my family as much as my loyal and devoted Taz did. That being said, do you plan on more puppies in the future? Hope to hear back from you.
