Blog Entry 25 of 39 Forest Creatures
Let me introduce you to our cast of characters. My husband "Pops" and I are both over 50, fairly educated and we live on five plus acres between Black Forest and Peyton with 4 Akitas and a truly imperfect cat, named of course, Purrfect. I grew up in Colorado, he's from Chicago. We love the Broncos and the Bears, music, television and technology. Some people lead fairly quiet lives. Our lives are usually filled with constant misadventure. I am not sure if it is because we have several dominant pets or because my husband is always misbehaving but whatever the reasons we are usually in the middle of a storm. This blog will chronicle our adventures when I have time to file them. Sometimes I will be asking advice, sometimes I will just try to make users laugh.

Meltdown (Maybe)
Contributed by: Pula Davis   on 3/13/2007

The recent warm weather and sun have totally changed our terrain out here in the last week or so. The drifts of snow have all but melted. We actually have a driveway and a back yard now. Although the mud and deep ruts are pretty serious, at least there's a tiny light at the end of the winter tunnel.
We are definitely going to be busy this spring trying to get the property back in order, but I am trying to have an optimistic outlook. Some more gravel for the driveway and a lot of grass seed should help. A friend of ours said it could be ten years before we have another winter like this one, let's hope he is right.
Lots of little misadventures have been keeping us hopping. Car problems, sick ancient relatives, craziness at work, you name it, good days, bad days. Typical 'life sucks' stuff.
The other morning we got a glimpse of things to come. Both my husband and I woke up and it was like we had aged twenty years over night. I couldn't move my head because my neck was totally stiff and painful and his ankle had mysteriously swelled up. We were a comical sight - him hobbling around and me unable to turn my head. The animals took great glee in romping around us as we searched for the ibuprofen.
Definitely, the menagerie has been keeping us busy. We had our male Kuma neutered last week. It was time and is a part of my master plan to take a hiatus from dog breeding and all the serious work and emotional stress that comes along with having puppies. It also should be better for Kuma's health as he ages. He came through it just fine but was extra grumpy for a few days. The vet said he was even growling while under anesthesia - I was not surprised. True to his usual unpredictable self, when we were at the vet he was friendly to one attendant and snarling at another. Maybe being neutered will make him a little more predictable, but I won't count on it.
I will probably return to breeding eventually, unless I come to my senses before then. And we have Roshi to continue Kuma's great bloodlines.
I was going to get Beauty spayed, but she thwarted that by going into heat. So she will get a momentary reprieve. My husband still wants to breed her but I really am torn. She is a very pretty and good natured dog, but also a very immature girl. Beauty and Motherhood might be too interesting for all of us.
Roshi is growing like only an Akita pup can, inches in days, or so it seems. We bought a collar for him that never fit. I underestimated his neck size. He's allowed in the back pasture now, since he is too large to squeeze through the fence and boy does he run! It is great to see him flying around with his mom Sable right on his heels. She keeps him in line.
So with the meltdown we are preparing for spring and lots more adventures.
