Blog Entry 21 of 38 Forest Creatures
Let me introduce you to our cast of characters. My husband "Pops" and I are both over 50, fairly educated and we live on five plus acres between Black Forest and Peyton with 4 Akitas and a truly imperfect cat, named of course, Purrfect. I grew up in Colorado, he's from Chicago. We love the Broncos and the Bears, music, television and technology. Some people lead fairly quiet lives. Our lives are usually filled with constant misadventure. I am not sure if it is because we have several dominant pets or because my husband is always misbehaving but whatever the reasons we are usually in the middle of a storm. This blog will chronicle our adventures when I have time to file them. Sometimes I will be asking advice, sometimes I will just try to make users laugh.

A Bridge too Far
Contributed by: Pula Davis   on 1/16/2007

What a weekend!

Started out fairly quiet considering we got more snow on Friday and some bitter cold temperatures. But Saturday morning as I checked outside to see how much more snow had fallen overnight, I noticed some paw prints in the front yard. When I asked my husband whether all the dogs were inside he said Beauty was out. And OUT she was.

She had taken the opportunity to walk across the snow drifts that have built up along and over our front fence and leave. The cold has made the snow hard and Beauty just used it as a bridge to freedom. I have posted a picture of the front fence where the drift is.

At first we couldn't believe it. Beauty is usually our quiet, playful, dog-child. Very obedient and kind of docile, it's out of character for her to just set off alone for parts unknown. I really don't think of her as smart enough to get into this kind of devilment.

However once we accepted that she was gone, the panic set in. We spent the next 2 hours searching on foot and by car for her all over the area in the biting cold. My imagination started to go wild because Beauty has never been out alone. She doesn't know anything about cars, or coyotes or mean other dogs. I was stricken. And my poor husband, who let her out, was unusually quiet. Beauty is his favorite.

During our search I was impressed with how helpful folks out here were. I only saw a few cars but everyone was really concerned and said they would keep an eye out for her. One woman said "she was here earlier playing with my dogs" so at least she was not out terrorizing the neighborhood.

After returning to the house to warm up we were standing looking out front and to our surprise there was Beauty trotting towards home. I can't imagine where she was, but she is obviously a lot smarter than we ever thought.
The reunion was worthy of a Lassie Come Home movie scene.

So now what do we do? We tried shoveling but that didn't last past one day. The wind and more snow took care of that. Every time I decide I can't shovel more, I wind up having to spend several hours doing exactly that.

For now, Miss Beauty is going to be mostly staying inside due to the extreme cold and when outside, we have had to put her on a runner. That's totally awful but until we can get rid of her bridge to freedom it is neccessary. I have seen too many animals lying by the sides of the roads out here.

But at least we found her. Talk about lucky. Spent a lot of time loving on her when we weren't hacking away at her escape route. I have also talked to a friend who has a frontend loader about coming out this weekend and moving the snowbridges away from the fence line. That would help.

And there's more snow in the forecast.
