Blog Entry 9 of 39 Forest Creatures
Let me introduce you to our cast of characters. My husband "Pops" and I are both over 50, fairly educated and we live on five plus acres between Black Forest and Peyton with 4 Akitas and a truly imperfect cat, named of course, Purrfect. I grew up in Colorado, he's from Chicago. We love the Broncos and the Bears, music, television and technology. Some people lead fairly quiet lives. Our lives are usually filled with constant misadventure. I am not sure if it is because we have several dominant pets or because my husband is always misbehaving but whatever the reasons we are usually in the middle of a storm. This blog will chronicle our adventures when I have time to file them. Sometimes I will be asking advice, sometimes I will just try to make users laugh.

Storm 10, Us 5
Contributed by: Pula Davis   on 10/29/2006

Well the storm didn't take us completely by surprise but it did make a major mess here. At least we never lost power like some areas did and we had all the animals secured. We got about 20 inches I think. At one point the drifts were 4-5 ft in the front of the house and down by the barn. Strangely, the dogs never realized they could walk up on a drift by the fence and jump out of the yard. I am really glad since cross country chasing of dogs in the deep snow is something I have done and did not do well.
Rather than shovel, my husband Pops walked aournd until he found an escape route and we drove around the drift in the front and hoped Colorado's sunshine would help us out. But the temperatures are now so warm today that we have a quagmire of mud and snow to contend with. The house is still standing and since it is only October, we certainly had better get used to this.
My project today was to try to get the puppies to stand and eat some gruel for the first time. Some of them got the idea, others decided to walk through the food bowl. I definitely want to get them eating some on their own. They are playing and exploring their surroundings - still escaping at every opportunity. I am in love with most of them which is another downside to having puppies. Having 10 Akitas is now a possibility. (Not really)
Right in the middle of posting this we had an ADVENTURE - the kind that I have alluded to but haven't really had since I started the blog -
I had let Sable outside for a while and I thought I heard groaning or growling or something so I went to investigate. Sable decided to go under the deck and couldn't get out. At first I thought she was just being ornery, when I called her. Then I heard her grunting and realized she was too fat with her milk swollen underbelly to get out. So after about an hour of crawling on our bellies and coaxing with every treat we have, we had to get a rake and shovel to dig her out.
She was muddy, we were muddier and by the time we got her cleaned up and back inside she had some very hungry and angry puppies to deal with. The kitchen is now covered in mud and we have guests coming in two hours- so that's all for now.
