Blog Entry 7 of 38 Forest Creatures
Let me introduce you to our cast of characters. My husband "Pops" and I are both over 50, fairly educated and we live on five plus acres between Black Forest and Peyton with 4 Akitas and a truly imperfect cat, named of course, Purrfect. I grew up in Colorado, he's from Chicago. We love the Broncos and the Bears, music, television and technology. Some people lead fairly quiet lives. Our lives are usually filled with constant misadventure. I am not sure if it is because we have several dominant pets or because my husband is always misbehaving but whatever the reasons we are usually in the middle of a storm. This blog will chronicle our adventures when I have time to file them. Sometimes I will be asking advice, sometimes I will just try to make users laugh.

Skunks and snow
Contributed by: Pula Davis   on 10/19/2006

Have had a couple of adventures since my last posting. We had a minor episode with a skunk, but nothing close to what we have had in past encounters. I have a great recipe for a de-skunking solution that really beats using tomato juice. So Beauty, our 1 year old brat, who sticks her nose into everything, including skunks, got a bath in that early Saturday morning. I never actually saw the skunk in question, but the odor was proof enough.
We had a snow storm Tuesday night. Not a blizzard, but a good amount of snow for October. Although folks that have lived in this area for a while will remember another October storm that really dumped on us. This was just enough to remind us of things to come.
The animals, despite all being born in Colorado, were not happy this morning. Their normal pathways were snow bound and it was cold. I literally had to shove my male dog Kuma out the door. The older he gets the less pleased he is with cold weather. I should add that "outside" includes an enclosed barn with a couch for him to recline on if he wants to, so he isn't exactly being sent out into the elements.
Someone at work asked me what the puppies thought about the snow. (Obviously not a dog person) The puppies won't see their first snow storm - they probably won't see any snow until they are in their new homes.
All our "babies" are now standing and stumbling along. They don't go very far, but they do make feeble attempts at seeing the sights. Mama Sable diligently follows the escapees trying to keep them in line. I am not thrilled with these escape attempts as they seem to always happen at 2 a.m. and are accompanied by loud yelps. No wonder we are tired...
