Blog Entry 5 of 40 Forest Creatures
Let me introduce you to our cast of characters. My husband "Pops" and I are both over 50, fairly educated and we live on five plus acres between Black Forest and Peyton with 4 Akitas and a truly imperfect cat, named of course, Purrfect. I grew up in Colorado, he's from Chicago. We love the Broncos and the Bears, music, television and technology. Some people lead fairly quiet lives. Our lives are usually filled with constant misadventure. I am not sure if it is because we have several dominant pets or because my husband is always misbehaving but whatever the reasons we are usually in the middle of a storm. This blog will chronicle our adventures when I have time to file them. Sometimes I will be asking advice, sometimes I will just try to make users laugh.

Dog days
Contributed by: Pula Davis   on 10/10/2006

Well, it's no longer the dog days of summer since it snowed here last night, but dogs still rule at our house. Sable spent her first day "alone" yesterday with her pups and all went well. She is definitely more diligent about the "babies" this time. She stays in the box with them unless we coax her out. With her first litter I had to remind her of her duties. This also means we are actually getting some sleep, a novelty at my house.
In between watching the Broncos game (THEY WON) and trying to get some kind of dinner, I had my hands full taking care of all the dogs. It just occured to me that we now have 10!
All the dogs ate huge quantities last night and Sable had a number of treats, afterall, she is eating for 8.
I weighed the pups and we came up with temporary names for them, most of which are based loosely on the color of their collars that we put on at birth.
So here's a list:
Leader (First born, leader of the pack,a boy)
Lilac (She's the biggest girl)
Ito (For a dear friend of mine)
Snow (White collar and with snow falling how could we not name 1 Snow?)
Squeaky (She's very vocal, at least her lungs are strong)
Big Blue (Male that looks most like his dad)
Goldie (Obviously we were getting tired at this point)
Fortunately for these guys their owners will eventually change these names.
The pups have all gained weight - most are almost 2 lbs already. Akitas don't stay small for very long.
I have included a photo of Sable nestled with her "babies" after I finished doing what I am sure she considered torturing them.
