Blog Entry 11 of 14 Sample this and that
Welcome to Sample's blog. I am a mom of three young girls and live in a great neighborhood and community. A very small town with a huge heart. I struggle with a theme for my blog, so I will just tell you that it is about everyday life as a mom, wife, friend, community journalist and sports enthusiast. I truly believe everyone is interesting and has a story to tell. I hope to share some interesting, funny, insightful and informative blogs that you can relate to as a parent, friend, neighbor, YMCA sports fan, working mom, dad, at home or outside the home, everyday joe about everyday life.

Second Hut Trip
Contributed by: Michele Sample   on 1/25/2008

This weekend marks the Second Annual Monument Hut Trip - a name I just came up with. Eight couples, including my husband and I will be traveling to the mountains and staying in a 10th Mountain Hut for the second summer. Last year we had a very memorible time.

The first morning, we met for breakfast in Silverthorne, and then ventured up to our destination near Leadville.

Only three of the vehicles could drive into the hut, so we decided on the "manliest trucks" to carry all the coolers, food, ice, water, sleeping bags, backpacks and bags.

The rest of us hiked about three miles to the log cabin. I realized at that moment I didn't pack enough bug spray. My friends referred to me as the "smorgasbord" for the mosquitoes. This year I went to REI and purchased some very expensive bug repellent you soak your clothes in.

Each meal was delegated to two couples. Food was plentiful, and delicious. I know we were all very active, and we were hungry and needed our energy but when we sat down to eat on the picnic tables, I would have to say we had some of the best meals.

My spouse and I were in charge of Saturday breakfast along with another couple. We cooked a breakfast fit for a king over an iron stove - biscuits and gravy, bacon, eggs, potatoes and fruit.

After breakfast we set out for one of the longest and most challenging hikes I have ever been on - a mountain called Homestake. We "peaked" at 14,000 feet.
After we made it to the top, I realized it was well worth the work. As I ate my granola bar and drank more water, I was amazed by the view.

Other trip activities included fishing, playing charades, eating more four-course meals, and playing cards. (The female team went home with the most wins in charades by the way).

On the last morning, we went on a hike to find a lake. We never found it, but I don't think anybody cared.

I had some of the best laughs that weekend and hold these friendships very dear. (I know who to call if I'm lost on a mountain too!)

Can't wait to see everyone this weekend, and play some more charades in the mountains.
